End Period Poverty
Since October 2023, the Huron County Library has made free menstrual products available at all branches as part of a pilot project started by the Huron-Perth Period Poverty Task Force. The goal of the Task Force is to ensure equitable access to quality menstrual supplies for all who need them. The group also engages in a range of activities from resource-sharing to improving access to current supply, to advocating for broader, more systemic long-term solutions for Huron and Perth.
Period Poverty is a lack of access to menstrual products due to cost or other barriers. Research indicates almost two-thirds of people who menstruate in Canada have missed work or school because of lack of access to necessary hygiene products. Due to stigma surrounding menstruation, these issues are often not discussed.
Free period products are available in the restrooms at all 12 Huron County Library branches, all libraries in Perth County, as well as Avon Maitland District School Board facilities. Locations for free menstrual products can also be found on an interactive map at periodpin.ca.
International Women’s Day event
In celebration of International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 8, 2025, the Huron-Perth Period Poverty Task Force will be making a selection of free period products, including pads, tampons, Diva Discs, and Diva Wash, available at all Huron and Perth Libraries during regular hours of operation.
This initiative is made possible through a $90,000 grant from Shoppers Foundation for Women’s Health and the continued efforts of the Huron-Perth Period Poverty Task Force.
International Women’s Day is an annual global celebration that recognizes women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements while advocating for a more inclusive world. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” highlights the urgent need to address systemic barriers and biases that continue to hinder gender equality. According to the World Economic Forum, full gender parity will not be achieved until 2158 at the current rate of progress.
