Huron County Author Talk & Writers’ Workshops

The Huron County Museum and Huron County Library have partnered once again to host Huron County Author Talk featuring local author panel discussions and a book fair on Saturday, Nov. 16, and writers’ workshops on Sunday, Nov. 17. Saturday’s event is free to attend, while Sunday’s workshops have a registration fee of $25 per session.

Saturday, Nov. 16: Panel Discussions and Book Fair

Discover the creativity and storytelling happening in your own backyard! Local writers across genres, styles, and publishing methods writing in or about Huron County, join us to talk about their craft. Join them in conversation during the following themed panels! It’s FREE to attend! Donations appreciated.

  • 12:15 p.m. – Publishing the Past: Writers of Historical Fiction, Non-Fiction & Drama featuring David Yates, Sue Jaskula and Paul Ciufo
  • 1:45 p.m. – Genre Rebels: Writing and Publishing Across Different Market: Authors of young adult, mystery, romance, LGBTQ2s+, children’s and speculative fiction, featuring Avery Baker-Greaves, Arlene McFarlane, E.K. Johnston, Alexandra Mae Jones
  • 3:15 p.m. – Close to Home: Setting Stories in Huron County: Fictionalizing familiar settings. Featuring Don Hayward, Sandi Plewis, Sally Walker

Join us for coffee and conversation between panels! There will be time for chatting, book signings, delicious treats, and a book fair hosted by Bayfield Village Bookshop. Start your holiday shopping for the book-lover in your life, and get your copies signed by the authors! The titles on sale include something for everyone: young adult, children’s, science fiction, romance, mystery, historical fiction & local history.

Sunday, Nov. 17: Writers’ Workshops

Looking for more in-depth tips on editing and marketing as a local writer? Writers’ workshops will be offered on Day 2, Sunday, Nov. 17. Participants will learn practical strategies for editing and marketing, and will have the opportunity to network with other local authors. Workshops require pre-registration. The fee is $25 per session and includes light snack and refreshments for all participants.

12:30-2:30 p.m. – Revise Without Regret: Techniques to Breathe Life into Your Writing with Cindy Matthews: Are you a writer who hesitates to cross out your precious, hard-won words in early drafts? Do you find yourself struggling with revision? In this two-hour workshop, we’ll explore three powerful techniques that will transform your writing without losing its heart. Through hands-on activities and focused strategies, you’ll learn how to approach revision with confidence and creativity. Bring a sample of your work—a short story, memoir, or a chapter from a work in progress—to apply these techniques in real-time and start seeing immediate results. Workshop facilitator, Cindy Matthews, is an award-winning author of two collections of short stories, Took You So Long (Porcupine’s Quill, 2022) and The Roach Family and Other Stories (DarkWinter Press, 2024). She lives in a blue house on a hundred acre parcel in Bruce County, Ontario.

3-4:30 p.m. – Finding Your Readers – Marketing Your Book in 2024 with Wendy Million: Your book is published, now what? In this workshop, we’ll explore various avenues from social media to ads strategies to writing with your ideal reader in mind to not only find readers but keep them coming back for more.
